Meet Dr. April Japser, OD, FAAO
Dr. Jasper practices at her private practice in West Palm Beach, Florida. She earned her doctorate of Optometry degree in 1995 from Nova Southeastern University’s College of Optometry where she graduated with highest honors. She completed a residency program in Boston, during which she received specialized training in primary care, contact lenses, and ocular disease. While a resident in Boston, Dr. Jasper held a position as an adjunct professor at NEWENCO University where she taught primary care and ocular disease to optometry students and ophthalmology residents. Co-prosfessional editor of Women of Optometry Magazine from 2012-2018.
In 1996 she moved to Tallahassee, Florida where she held two retail contracts for six years. While in Tallahassee, she was President of the Northwest Florida Optometric Association for two years. In 2002, she moved to West Palm Beach, Florida where she bought an existing private practice. Since buying her private practice, she has expanded her office with a new location and expanded technology. She has also increased practice revenue by 300%. She is past President of the Florida Optometric Association’s Board of Trustees and a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry serving as a Chair of Corporate Relations Committee. Dr. Jasper has also served as Benedict Professor of Practice Management at University of Houston’s College of Optometry.
Dr. Jasper is the Chief Optometric editor of Optometric Management magazine and serves on several advisory boards. She is also a consultant to several companies within the Optometric field. She lectures around the country and has been recognized with several awards including Vision Monday’s Business Innovator, Vision Monday’s 2014 Most Influential Women in Optometry, Vision Source’s New Administrator of the Year, and Vision Source’s Administrator with the highest NPS rating.
Dr. Jasper is married to David Jasper and has two children. She enjoys writing, traveling, and spending time with her family and two dogs.
Meet Dr. Katie Gilbert-Spear, OD, JD, MPH
Dr. Gilbert-Spear graduated with honors from Auburn University with a degree in Biomedical Sciences. She obtained her Masters degree in Public Health-Epidemiology from UAB School of Public Health and her Doctorate of Optometry from UAB School of Optometry. In 2019, she graduated, with highest honors, from Mitchell Hamline School of Law with her Juris Doctorate degree specializing in Health Law and Compliance.
Dr. Gilbert-Spear moved to Pensacola, Florida in 2004 where she and her husband, Dr. Carl Spear, grew one practice into four private practices and one Ophthalmology office which she managed for twelve years. She is the founder and director of The Visual Performance Center, which has conducted numerous research studies in contact lenses, solutions, dry eye and visual performance.
She is a consultant and speaker with various eyecare companies and was nominated in 2014 as one of the ‘most influential women in optical’ by Vision Monday.
Dr. Gilbert-Spear is currently serving on the Florida Board of Optometry and AOA’s Third-Party Committee. She served on the Florida Optometric Association’s Board of Trustees for three years. She is also a current member of the Florida Bar, the American Bar Association and the American Public Health Association.
Dr. Gilbert-Spear and Dr. Carl Spear have five children and two dogs. She enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her family.
